"Most people go to Europe or the Caribbean or someplace nice for their first out-of-country experience. Honey, I think you missed the memo."
-nurse giving me shots
Progress has been made!
I am excited, because I now have my yellow card. I know how people wanting a green card feel. Kinda.
I have all of the shots and immunizations I need for travel to Africa (well, I do have some typhoid pills to take after I finish up this antibiotic treatment for my strep throat. It's crazy how everything hits all at once, isn't it?)
So I have amoxacillin in my system from the strep, and I ended up getting three shots for travel.
I really don't like needles. Or the thought of shots.
Some people are creepy and like watching the needle go into their body.
NOT ME. Ew, ew, ew!
*shudder*
So I feel loopy today. But that's okay.
I am so thankful for modern medicine.
Today started out kinda crummy. (Locked outside in PJ's in the cold? Yep...)
But then I remembered, God has got this. And he is majorly showering me with blessings I take for granted.
Like health, beautiful weather, family, and people who care about me.
Taking time to notice those little blessings totally changes ones outlook.
Today is going to be awesome. Because God is in control, and I am not.

SUPERBOWWWLLLLLL
So... what's new for me?
Not much.
I've been sick [again].
Fun stuff!
And this kind of sick isn't the kind that lets me shuffle around the world. Because I'm contagious, and it would be inconsiderate to share the germs.
On Friday, I woke up with a fever and dull achy-ness. I rested, and hoped it would go away. It didn't. I felt like...well, there are no words. I do know that I was stubborn and insisted on going to eat thai food. I love thai food, and no fever is going to stand in my way. I thought maybe I was just making the sickness up.
On Saturday, it was worse. Despite the fact that I could barley shuffle out of bed, I could almost convince myself that it was all in my head. I could be a trooper, I had work to do!
Thank goodness, my parents still know best.
They took me to the doctor. I told my dad that I could sleep it off, but he wanted a strep test done, just to be sure.
When I went to the doctor, he acted like I wasn't really sick at first. He took my temperature, which was around 100.7 (low-grade for normal people, a higher fever for me. See, I run a low temperature naturally. I think it's genetic, but my "normal body temperature" is about 97.6, a degree lower than the average. It's weird, but it's normal.) he looked at my throat and told me that since my dad wanted it, they would do the test.
I'm pretty sure he thought I was just a girl with low pain tolerance.
He was wrong. He cam back in and told me that I did have strep. He was so much nicer.
He prescribed three different types of pills and told me to rest.
Rest I did. I slept for hours and hours. I ate some dinner, and then slept all night.
Crazy.
Yesterday, I rested all day too. I woke up this morning feeling tired.
But I've had enough sickness, and it's time to be a grown up. I need to be healthy now.
So I am going to be.
Part of me would love to take it easy again today, but that's not happening.
Yesterday, as pretty much every american knows, was the super bowl, or Everyone-pretends-they-like-football-day.
I didn't really care about the outcome until I remembered that jerk Tom Brady played for the Patriots [boo!] and that Kareem McKenzie (name twin!) played for the Giants.
Then I was a Giants girl.
It was a nail-biter finish.
I watched the commercials, laughed a bit with a friend (I have a good idea for a blog post now! Inspired.), and was blown away by OK GO's chevy ad.
Favorite. Ad. Ever.
At. Least. For. This. Year.
Also, it's a good song, so, win-win.
This is also a practical application of physics!
Finally, I am seeing the light when it comes to that subject.
Watch it:
So, yep. My weekend: get sick, sleep, watch the superbowl, sleep.
Now off to be a productive adult!
*sigh*
Ooh, what was YOUR favorite ad? Do tell.

Not Contagious
After four days of fever, my fever is GONE!
Also, my throat isn't killing me like it was.
I am so happy.
Some people may enjoy being sick for the coddling and pity one gets, but this time around, I detested it, because I actually had things to do. And this wasn't the kind of sick that enables you to chill and watch movies. This was like nausea-and-dizzy-and-aches-and-a-killer-throat sick.
Enough whining, I am just glad I am well-er.
To celebrate, I went for a 4-mile walk. I was so restless.
I wanted to run, but my parents told me not to push it.
Now just to be rid of this cough. And the headache. Then all will be hunky-dory again, and I can rush about like I'm used to doing.

Don't read.
I'm still semi-sick.
Don't worry, *hack*cough* it's just a cold.
I'm not posting on my blog until this is over. (This post doesn't count except towards my self-dare)
Don't read any further. It's dull.
Maybe I'll just be sick forever.
Oh joy.
...This will be boring. You've been warned.
I did venture out into the world today.
I had a few books overdue from the library *shame on me* and I really didn't want to have a HUGE amount of fees.
Also, I saw that the craft store was having a fantastic sale. I looove crafts.
Also also, my itty bitty coffee maker ran out of filters. (pretty much the end of the world.)
I overcame and drove around town to run my errands.
It was good for me, because I'm just dealing with the cold. It builds character.
Among other things, I made another hemp anklet today (the one pictured is older). I love jewelry-making.

Cohesion? Not Happening.
I cannot write a coherent post.
A Word Of Advice:
If you're feeling even slightly off physically, DO NOT GO FOR A 6 1/2 mile run. Particularly if the last mile of that run is in the spitting rain. Not that I speak from experience or anything...
I also can't really speak audibly.
When I get sick, I complain about it.
Well, at least to my blog I do. I'm going to be a crotchety old woman, I can tell...
A good post is just not happening. I feel a strange mix of tiredness and pent-up energy. I don't understand it.
I have been so braindead today. You wouldn't believe the number of airheaded things I've done. No, I'm not telling them. But just know that I shouldn't mess with a stove when I don't feel good.
Maybe tomorrow I'll feel better.
In the meantime, I'll keep practicing my guitar. (Crazy On You is going to be mastered. Soon I'll be a rocker, just you wait)

summertime sickness
One thing I dislike about being sick in the summer:
It's not as comfy to cover oneself with blankets, and hot tea isn't as soothing as it is in the winter. Because it's 80 degrees, that's why.
I wish there was some law of nature that made one immune to viruses during the summertime.
At first, I thought this was really bad allergies...so I took one of those pills.
The pink ones.
The pills that make me super loopy tired.
Yes, BENADRYL. You know what it does to me? Look here.
But it's not allergies...and now I'm super loopy. Like, my eyes are glassy and I can't think straight.
I had plans for today. It's going to be hard to carry said plans out.
Grrr.
**Update: Actually, the worst part is not being able to sing. No singing? Double grr.**

dance...and "events"
This weekend I went contra-dancing.
It was majorly fun.
Here's what happened on the ride home (we'll call my friend L)
...
I danced for three hours Saturday night. Every dance (except for the 10-minute-intermission when they played polka music. I know it's shocking, but I don't know how to polka) was danced. Because your brain is thinking about the dance moves and what you're supposed to be doing next, it ignores your body telling you to take a rest.
It was majorly fun.
Here's what happened on the ride home (we'll call my friend L)
Me: I noticed there were at least five guys wearing skirts tonight. That was just a bit awkward, huh?
L: Oh yeah, haha, I guess they like twirling too! Did you see the transvestite?
Me: *feeling naive* Ohh, really? I thought that was just a really looks-challenged individual... I danced with it! ...I think I'm going to be sick.
L: haha, well, we can change the subject.
Me: No really, I'm going to be sick.
...and the contents of my stomach were in my lap. Luckily it was just water and banana, but still. Gross! I got myself cleaned up, and the conversation continued...
L: I'm so sorry! I didn't know it would actually make you sick to talk about transvestites! I won't ever bring that up again.
...
Contra attracts a VARIETY of people, a real variety. It's not a bad thing -- they're all nice folks, but, um, they just have a different way of doing things.
Ok, ok, ok. I'll just say it. There was a person there who looked like neither a man nor a woman.
And I danced with him/her (let's just say it). Not as a partner, but when you're going through the line, you get a turn dancing with everyone.

Well...
My mental acuity is returning! I'm so glad. The brain fog is lifting, and I couldn't be happier.
(I think it has something to do with Goody's headache powder)
I apologize for being ill and whining about it.
Apparently...
I sounded like I was dying.

sickness = OCD
I am sick. It's great that I can blog my complaints for all to read. I'm sure everyone just loves reading about things of that nature, right?
I'll try not to be too whiny, ok?

Yet ANOTHER Letter of Complaint
Dear cold virus,
I thought we had agreed for you to leave. You were gone almost all day yesterday, so I made plans that DO NOT involve you. But, to my surprise, you showed up last night and decided to hang around today. Sorry, but there's no room for you.
Can't you take a hint?
Don't you remember my letter to you a few months ago? (If you need to be refreshed, visit this link)
At that time, we agreed that you would go away.
Granted, you never responded, but since you are a microscopic virus, and therefore incapable of speech, (though you are very good at taking it away from others), I just used the old "silence conveys consent" trick: you ask a question, if there is no answer, you assume the answer is yes.
for example:
"Hey cold will you go away?"
*no answer*
"yay!"
I know you feel unwanted; the truth is, you are.
Go away. You're messing up my flow.
I shall attempt to overcome you, and I do NOT want my half-marathon schedule messed with more than it has been.
Capisce?
Not Yours,
Makenzie

Goodmornoonight, world!
What a weekend.
Friday night, I danced for three hours straight, spinning like a top 50% of the time. Contra-dancing was oh-so-fun. (No, it has nothing to do with being a member of the guerrilla force that opposed a left-wing government in Nicaragua.)
In contra dancing, the ladies all wear twirling skirts. I love wearing twirling skirts.
For the most part, I had experienced partners who pointed me in the right direction. Contradancing reminded me of a mixture of a square dance, an irish jig, and English country dancing.
You know, I'm not the best at today's "normal dancing".
(I am afraid that my normal dancing is like Mia's in the Princess Diaries...
okay, okay, I AM a few steps higher than her "doggy on a dashboard" dance... But really, I am such a mega-super-white girl.)
Happily, I was able to grasp the concept of contradance and go with it. To say I was thrilled that I understood this kind of dancing would be an understatement.
I had a gnawing fear that I would greatly embarrass myself at the dance. ESPECIALLY since I missed the lesson for beginners. Admittedly, I goofed, but everyone was gracious, and luckily I wasn't the only confused one there.
I rejoiced in that fact. I also twirled, swung, and learned some of the lingo.
...words like allemande, gypsy, ladies-chain, hen ...
The dances weren't overly complex, so eventually I begun to understand the patterns and fall in line with the dancing more naturally.
I've decided to wear shoes when I dance in the future. It's suggested that you wear dancing flats or go barefoot when you contradance.
I thought, "Hey, I love going barefoot, so why not?" It was fun for the first bit, but then blisters came for a visit. Talk about major pain.
I'm finding some dancing flats. My feet were KILLING me, but the fun of dancing overruled the pain. My brain didn't process that I had beat my feet up until the end of the evening, on the ride home.
So I had a major workout on Friday, despite it being a "rest day". I made up for it with extra rest, though.
I had a sinking suspicion I wasn't feeling so well.
Saturday was a great day, but I could tell I wasn't 100%. I went to see Social Network with a friend (don't see that movie. just don't), ate some yummy Cooper's bbq (do eat that. just do), I went home...
...and then I came down with a fever and a killer sore throat.
Who knows where I picked it up.
I positively hate being sick. It brings out the worst in me. It really, truly does. Ask my sisters.
Sickness makes me tired and irritable, obviously.
I get totally zoned out, like I can't focus for anything. I just sort of shuffle around, drink hot tea, and sleep.
It makes me feel OCD (guess who cleaned her room?)
Ugh, I hate feeling that way.
I'm working on not being such a baby about sickness, but I have heard that redheads have a lower tolerance for pain...
I guess that doesn't mean I can use that as an excuse.
I'm almost as right as rain today. (question: how right is that, anyways?)
After sleeping yesterday and chillaxing, my body is healing itself.
Yay immune system! Good on yourself!
I can't decide if it's a good idea to try to run today, or if I should try to take *one* more rest day. I'm a few days behind schedule...
There goes my voice. It's odd to hear myself speak. My voice keeps cracking from the bug I have lodged in my throat.
Speaking of bugs, here's some of my favorite butterfly pictures (Blue is best):

(don't) kiss me
Well, the irony is crazy.
This irony makes me laugh ...soundlessly.
Why soundlessly, you ask?
If I tell you, it will cause you to pity me, I'm sure. {At least I hope it will. DO pity me.}
To set the stage: I've been learning some new tunes on the guitar. Last week, my sister and I sang "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None the Richer. We sang it a few times in a row. We even went so far as to sing it for others to hear.
You reap what you sow.
I didn't plan on actually kissing anyone. You know this, right?
Strangely and sadly enough, I have the KISSING SICKNESS.
Ewwwwww.....
*Dun, Dun, Duuuuuuunnn*
How can this be?
All I did was sing about kissing.
Maybe I should go whisper-sing about NOT kissing. Would that help??
I've been sick quite a few times in the past few months off and on.
All of the viruses have had the same complications and symptoms.
Annnnnd, the symptoms match up with mono.
My voice is gone.
My head is throbbing.
My lymph nodes are swollen.
I'm not hungry.
I ache.
I also have a propensity to complain via blog. (the tell-tale symptom)
Sorry. I don't mean to take it out on you. But since I can't vocalize my feelings, typing about them helps.
...I read "Hard Times" by Charles Dickens today. I hadn't read it before. It was a good read, but sad and a bit depressing. Not the best "get well book"
It made me thankful to live now rather than in Victorian England. I'm blessed to not simply have facts.
In order to redeem this post, that is to make it somewhat readable and a smidgen entertaining, I will tell you about a hobby of mine. [Prepare for major geekiness.]
I have a garden growing in my room.
It is a modest garden, but it adds a sense of homeyness and happy.
Okay, it's a collection of houseplants.
But they are so fun!
...I can see you rolling your eyes.
Stop.
If you were allergic to almost every animal, you'd love plants too.
In order to personify them, I have named them. Some of them even have baby plants now. aww...
There is my crazy colored plant that turned out to be two plants in one pot. Bonus! After separating them, I decided to call it "Duran" and "Duran". Good band and good plants.
Then there's my dappled aloe plant that goes by the name of Fitzgerald.
It has grown two aloe-ettes that have been transplanted.
There's two baby sunflowers that are growing rapidly. Who knew that you could grow sunflowers inside? Turns out, it's entirely feasible
...I hope.
Anywho, I missed homework help, due to my sickness. There was still sunshine and rainbows tonight, because Noella {who is an amazing girl} made me and my sister a picture.
Have I mentioned that I love art?
This irony makes me laugh ...soundlessly.
Why soundlessly, you ask?
If I tell you, it will cause you to pity me, I'm sure. {At least I hope it will. DO pity me.}

In other news, today, as Mom was slicing potatoes for potato soup, she found a hollow cavity that looks like a heart in one of the potatoes. Just in time for...
Also my beautiful bed arrived today! It looks princessy, but it does NOT have a pea under the mattress (I checked)
I think I'll go make use of it. I'm so groggy.

the feel-good food of the season.
I am proud to say that I made potato soup.
I am also glad to say that my potato soup turned out nicely, and is currently warming my hands as I slurp it from my bowl.
It was terribly simple, but as is true with almost any soup, it takes a bit of time to make.
It's savory, but it doesn't overstimulate your taste buds.
The purpose of this kind of soup is to heal.
With the colds going around [and my allergies], immunity boosters are most welcome. Drinking it immediately makes you feel like your immune system has been enhanced. It's one of the ultimate feel-better foods (in my opinion)
Okay, I'm no chef (although that was my life-plan when I was 15), but here is my version of potato soup:

In which I simply whine, so there is no use in reading...
Utter failure.
I'm beating this cold, but I've had a relapse.
I *cannot stop* sneezing.
Seriously.
This is craziness.
3 sneezes in a row, then 15 sneezes in a row.
Daddy was great to have made me hot tea. As I thought I was done with the sneeze fit, I started to drink my tea. Then it hit.
I stood there paralyzed. I was going to sneeze while holding a very full cup of steaming goodness. I held it off as long as I could but...
Luckily my tea didn't spill all over, but it was a mess.
This cold is evil.
I can't go to church this morning because I feel so crummy and I don't want to risk sneezing and coughing on everyone.
I've popped benadryl and cold-symptom reliever. I've waited for it to take effect. It's been an hour, and there is no change.
UGH UGH UGH UGH
I'm whining. Sorry.
Major bummer. MAJOR.
I guess I'll go sleep it off. Apparently my letters to this virus did no good.

A Message for my Cold
Dear Bad Germs,
Please oh please, I beg you, go AWAY. While you make a good song for Disturbed, I really don't want to be "down with the sickness".
You are trying to ruin my life? I see how it is. It won't work.
*hack*cough*sneeze*
I will survive. I'll do plenty of productive things -- even if you decide to stay around.
Sincerely,
Kenzie

sickness and sunshine
I think I am sick.
This is a horrid feeling.
I'm working on a fun post, but I thought that I should just mention the fact that I have some sort of ickiness. I thought it might be allergies, and it still could be that, but...
Everything feels slightly off in reality. I feel sleepy all of the time. My nose is stuffed, I can't stop sneezing, and I don't feel comfortable in my own skin -- literally.
This too shall pass.
I need to be joyful and make the best of this.
But it is hard.
SO HARD when I feel miserable.
Benadryl has helped some, but it makes everything even foggier.
What's the lesser of the two evils? Mental fogginess and feeling okay? Or to have mental acuity but feel not so great?
Today I had my braces tightened.
When it rains, it pours, right?
I'm going to stop whining now. I'll go count my blessings.
This week is a chill week. It's summer!!
I got my SAT scores back, and they weren't terrible.
I have many friends who love me.
I have a wonderful family...
I'm going to keep going, but I won't post them all on here.
Wow, I'm feeling a bit better already...

The nuances of being a neologist
I feel like rambling a bit
...again
This is what this blog is for, right? Right.
Summer is OH SO RAPIDLY approaching. I'm feeling giddy.
Summer is pretty much the best time of the year. At least right now it is. (In August, I just might be ready for some snow, but I doubt it.)
I remember this past winter thinking to myself,
"I'll miss the cold in July. I'll be whining about how hot it is. Maybe I should just soak up the cold."
So I did. I sat in the car, before the heat cut on, absorbing the chill. Let me tell you, it was nothing like soaking up sunshine or a warm day.
It was, well, cold. Not terribly pleasant. But I did it so that I wouldn't complain in the summer. And this past summer, I did not complain (about the heat, at least).
I've begun to value sleep. Perhaps that's a sign of maturity.
There are some cases where sleep is unimportant.
And that's okay. Every once in a while.
But trying to stay up every night does a number on one's immune system, brain, etc.
My sleeping patterns have been messed up lately. I've been feeling sick and crummy.
So, the past few nights, I've been going to bed at a somewhat decent hour.
The difference is drastic.
I'm still a night owl, but...
I'm beginning to understand that if I don't get at least 8 hours in, life becomes a haze. Life becomes no fun.
So a word to the wise: sleeeeep!
(and a neologist is someone who coins new words! FUN FACT ALERT!)
